  • Sweet little jelly shot heart boxes are a cute way to spread a little love. February 14th is rapidly approaching, and most people fall into one of two camps: 1) The “I’m in a relationship and get to spend this lovey-dovey holiday with my significant other” camp, or 2) the “I’m single and I hate Valentine’s Day” camp. (I fall into the latter this year.) But whichever you fall into, I’ve got the treat for you! Whether you’re creating a special evening for that special someone or drinking away your sorrows while catching a movie with your friends (yup, that’s me)… these adorable boozy bites inspired by The Hungry Housewife's Valentine's Day recipe are perfect for your day of hearts. To me, Valentine’s Day isn’t complete without some bubbly. (Come to think of it, most days aren’t complete without it, but that’s beside the point.) I also love the idea of cherry liquor to give the hearts a deep, rich flavor. (You could try a raspberry or strawberry liqueur if you prefer). The lemonade provides a nice base and adds a tartness to the shots. When ready to serve, carefully turn the pan out on a cutting board and, using a very sharp knife, cut into even squares. Arrange on a platter and serve! Who needs a box of conversation hearts when you have a box filled with a boozy heart? Cheers!

Heart Box Boozy Jello Shots

Ingredients

For the hearts

  • 1 cup lemonade
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 3/4 cup sparkling wine
  • 1/4 cup cherry liquor
  • Red food coloring

For the white boxes

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

    Pour lemonade into small saucepan, along with sugar if you are using. Sprinkle with two envelopes of gelatin and allow to soak in a minute or two. Heat on medium, stirring constantly until gelatin and sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Stir in liquor and slowly add sparkling wine. It will bubble up initially, but will eventually die down. Add enough red food coloring to achieve desired color.

    Spray a small pan or breading pan with nonstick cooking spray and wipe out with a paper towel. This will leave just enough residue to help dislodge the shots later. Pour in mixture and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

    When ready to make white layer, pour water into a small saucepan and sprinkle with gelatin. Allow to soak in a minute or two and then heat on medium, stirring constantly until gelatin dissolves. Remove from heat and pour into a heat-safe measuring cup. Add enough sweetened condensed milk to achieve approximately 1.5 cups of liquid. Stir to combine completely. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes. (Or it will melt the hearts.)

    Remove red mixture from fridge and using a small 1-inch heart-shaped cutter, cut into small shapes. Clean out pan and again spray with cooking spray and wipe with a paper towel. Arrange hearts in the tray in a straight line and equally spaced apart. Pour cooled white mixture around hearts. You may not need all of the white mixture. Fill until right below the level of the hearts. You don’t want to submerge them.

    Replace in refrigerator and allow to set at least 2-3 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, carefully turn the pan out on a cutting board and using a very sharp knife, cut into even squares. Arrange on a platter and serve!
